The term “Jump Cut” references a technique in film editing where an abrupt transition makes a subject jump from one spot to another. This project takes two given sections, or “jump cuts” of a building and frames them around the dialectic between Polar and Cartesian.
This dialectic creates an opportunity to view the given sections in new way: rather than the typical Cartesian section projection, the two prescribed building sections are rolled up in a circle and projected outward. The projected sections create two rotundas, which are then nested within each other. Both the inner and outer sections project out to generate each rotunda’s floor plates and walls. The larger rotunda is organized by a rectilinear Cartesian projection while the inner rotunda is organized by a Polar projection. This dialectic generates a series of varied volumes for the nested rotundas.
